Car Owner’s Manual Replacement FAQs

1. Can you replace an owner’s manual by VIN number?

Automakers may ask for your vehicle identification number (VIN) to make sure you get the right vehicle owner’s manual. However, you can’t substitute an OEM owner’s manual by VIN. The VIN provides information about the vehicle (specifications, history, etc.), but obtaining a specific car owner’s manual requires the make, model, and year.

2. What is a service manual?

The service manual is a more comprehensive document than the car owner’s manual and is used by automotive professionals, including mechanics and technicians. Service manuals are rarely supplied to the vehicle owner.

3. Do I need to keep a vehicle owner’s manual in the vehicle?

While it’s not mandatory, keeping the OEM owner’s manual in the vehicle is advisable as it provides important information on maintenance, troubleshooting, and specifications. When selling the vehicle, having the manual also adds value for the new owner.
